JOAN RYSER was an English teacher at Bloomington High School South, who passed away in March 2017. Her directions to her family asked for memorial contributions to a non-profit literacy organization. The Writers Guild was honored to be the recipient of these contributions, and in response has established this scholarship to be awarded annually.

She graduated valedictorian of Bloomfield High School and was the first female in her extended family to attend college. She studied English and Education on an academic scholarship at Indiana University and graduated in 1962. Ever the wordsmith, she taught American and European literature, creative writing, and grammar and composition at Bloomington High School South for 44 years, where she was a beloved mentor and teacher. She was diligently devoted to her students and expected that they produce their very best at all times. Joan was a deep and profound thinker and yearned to share her thoughts via her creative writing, marveling in parallel sentence structure, idioms, hyperbole and succinct word choice.
