Alexander Reid: Against the Fascist Creep

Alexander Reid Ross will be reading from his new book Against the Fascist Creep about the rise of fascism, and facilitating a discussion afterwords around local community responses to fascist aggression.

At a time when the line between conventional conservatives and open fascists is increasingly blurred, Against the Fascist Creep presents a clear analysis for how to fight back. Fascism’s roots lie in attempts by radicals to join ultra-nationalism with leftism in a revolutionary alliance. When the 2008 economic crisis combined with the wave of nationalism following Obama’s election and resentment after the “failed revolution” of Occupy Wall Street, new syntheses of revolutionary and right-wing thought fused online, in the militia movement, and in colleges to produce the current fascist movement based in the whims of financial speculators, developers, and their class collaborators. Alexander Reid Ross exposes these currents, sheds light on the ambiguous subcultures that feed into them, and offers important ideas on how to fight them back.

Researcher on the modern transnational fascist movement Marlene Laruelle calls Against the Fascist Creep “a must read book,” while founder of the One People’s Project, Daryle Lamont Jenkins, says, “this book not only tells a detailed history of fascism around the world… it shows the reader how they have been and can be fought.”

Alexander Reid Ross lectures in geography at Portland State University. He edited Grabbing Back: Essays Against the Global Land Grab and a contributor to Life During Wartime: Resisting Counterinsurgency.
