How to find out what’s happening:

Your first resource is the website of the Writers Guild at Bloomington. The Writers Guild’s website provides up to date information on literary events around town. You can also get on the email list for the Writers Guild at Bloomington and become a member. Once you sign up and join you will also receive emails with information and reminders about local events. You can also get on the email list for Boxcar Books (and sign up for their newsletter), the Ivy Tech John Waldron Arts Center, the BEAD email newsletter. You’ll also find events listed in the events calendars for the Herald Times, Indiana Daily Student, Visit Bloomington, and radio stations WFHB and WFIU.

Open Mic & Readings

Periodically open mics are organized at various venues around town by various persons or groups. Check the Writers Guild website for information.

The Writers Guild provides the First Sunday Prose Reading and Open Mic on the first Sunday of each month (except June and July). Location: Boxcar Books from 3 to 5 pm.

The Writers Guild also provides the Last Sunday Poetry Reading and Open Mic on the last Sunday of each month (except June and July). Location: Bloomington Monroe County Convention Center in the Rogers room from 3 to 4:30 pm.

The Writers Guild at Bloomington produces the Lemonstone reading series and the Fountain Square Poetry Series with events throughout the year.

Looking for writing groups or classes?

Small, personal writing groups are often found through meeting people, so talk to other writers at literary events.

Classes / Workshops

NOTE: These workshops are currently on Hiatus.  The Writers Guild offers a Writing Workshop on the Third Sunday of each month (except June and July). This is for Writers Guild members only. There is a maximum of 10 people.  Pre-registration required. To register go to Members Only section on the website.

The Ivy Tech John Waldron Arts Center offers The Waldron writing hour each week from noon to 1:00 pm. Facilitated by Bloom Magazine award-winning writer Cara Prill, each session will uses themes such as point of view, metaphor and simile, and word choice to guide you in becoming a better writer. For information call 330-6041. There is a fee.

The Park and Recreation Department offers classes through its People’s University. They produce a seasonal catalog of classes which can also be found on their website.

Boxcar Books offers classes and workshops.

Continuing Education at Indiana University offers classes.

Women Writing for a Change, and Writing for a Change Foundation Bloomington, Inc., offer classes and workshops.

Once a year in the summer, Indiana University offers the Indiana University Writer’s Conference.

The Writers Guild at Bloomington periodically offers workshops with special guest leaders, as well as panels and special information events.
